May is an underrated vacation month for most tourist destinations, but it’s no surprise that many people don’t travel at this time of year. Kids aren’t out of school yet, and the spring rains are still lingering. But for those who can travel at this time of year, the warm, sunny weather is perfect for spending time in nature, whether it’s on the beach, in the park, or in the mountains. Even in the United States, one of the world’s largest countries by land area, there are plenty of warm places to visit in May. Visit these places before the season changes and avoid the summer crowds (and heat).

10 warm places in the US to visit in May

Many of the best warm places to visit in the USA in May are popular cities known for getting extremely hot in the summer. May is the perfect time to visit these hotspots before the heat becomes unbearable. Other places on this list are tourist destinations that aren’t typically vacation spots, but could be great if you get the chance.

Austin, Texas

Lady Bird Lake in downtown Austin

Known as the live music capital of the world, Austin’s average high temperature in May is about 85°F, making for a lovely warm weather before the harsh Texas summer heat sets in. This month is the perfect time to enjoy Austin’s great outdoor spaces, including Barton Creek Greenbelt, Lady Bird Lake Hike & Bike Trail, and Zilker Park, before the heat hits its peak. Many of Austin’s top annual events take place in May, including the ATX Old Weird Festival and Spring Pecan Street Festival. 6th Street’s famous live music scene reaches its peak with the opening of patios. Hotel rates are also still affordable before summer prices hit.

Savannah, Georgia

Madison Square Savannah, Georgia

Savannah’s average high temperature in May is 83°F and low temperature is 64°F, warm enough for shorts but not oppressive. Savannah’s well-preserved historic district, with its cobblestone streets and historic architecture, is best explored when temperatures are comfortable. May offers warmth without the oppressive heat of summer. The city is known for its beautiful squares, parks, and gardens. In May, these green spaces come to life with flowers and trees, creating a beautiful backdrop for visitors. Events like the Savannah Music Festival and the Savannah Home & Garden Tours offer fun local experiences in May.

Napa Valley, California

While many would consider any major city in Southern California technically classified as a warm city to visit in the US in May, there are some options that are much better than others. With highs of around 75°F, May offers the perfect weather for vineyard tours, wine tasting, and lounging outdoors in the iconic Napa Valley. May is a wonderful time to visit Napa Valley as the vineyards begin to turn vibrant green and bloom. The weather is warm, creating a comfortable environment for enjoying wine tastings and vineyard tours.

With its picturesque landscape of rolling hills and vineyards, Napa Valley is a visually stunning destination. May brings clear skies and comfortable temperatures for exploring the region. Apart from wine-related activities, you can enjoy outdoor activities such as hot air ballooning, hiking, and biking. May’s mild weather adds to the overall experience. Napa Valley is also known for its gourmet dining experiences. Outdoor dining is even more enjoyable in May, allowing you to savour local cuisine in beautiful surroundings.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas is located in the Mojave Desert, and May is the transitional month between spring and summer. Temperatures are rising, but are still relatively mild compared to the peak of summer heat. The average high temperature in May is around 90°F, making it very warm and sunny, but not scorching hot like summer. It’s perfect pool and cabana weather to enjoy Las Vegas’ world-class resort pools and day clubs.

Las Vegas is also known for its vibrant nightlife. The warm, pleasant evenings in May create the perfect atmosphere for strolling the famous Las Vegas Strip and attending a variety of entertainment events. Golf enthusiasts can take advantage of the numerous golf courses in and around Las Vegas, while outdoor enthusiasts can explore the nearby Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Of course, casinos await those interested.

Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix’s May highs are fairly warm, hovering around 95°F, but still not scorching. The dry desert heat is comfortable and bearable for many before summer temperatures reach triple digits. Because the city is located in the Sonoran Desert, temperatures drop in the evenings, making outdoor activities more enjoyable. Speaking of the desert, blooming plants make it an ideal time to visit area attractions like the Desert Botanical Garden.

There are also plenty of hiking trails and outdoor adventures around Phoenix. May is the perfect month for exploring the unique landscapes of the Sonoran Desert, including Camelback Mountain and South Mountain Park. For other activities, Phoenix has a vibrant cultural scene, and visitors can enjoy the warm weather in May to explore museums and art galleries and attend events. Popular events include the Phoenix Comic Book Festival and the Arizona Renaissance Festival.

San Diego, California

Palm tree line

San Diego boasts a mild Mediterranean climate year-round, making it one of the warmest places to visit in the US in May. The average high temperature in May is usually around 70°F and the low temperature is around 60°F, making it perfect weather for the beach. It’s one of the best times to visit San Diego before the June gloomy saltwater layer sets in and the weather becomes cooler and cloudier. Popular May events in the city include the Gator by the Bay Music Festival and the San Diego County Fair. It’s also a great time to explore outdoor spots like Balboa Park, the San Diego Zoo, and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

The average high temperature in May is around 75°F with low humidity, making it very comfortable for sightseeing. It’s one of the best times to visit this high desert city before the scorching summer hits. It’s known for its rich history, adobe architecture, and vibrant art scene. Take advantage of the warm, sunny days to explore the art galleries at historic Santa Fe Plaza and Canyon Road. Popular events in Santa Fe include the Santa Fe Century Bike Ride, Santa Fe Artists Market, and Native Treasures Indian Art Festival. Or get outdoors and hike the Aspen Vista Trail or Dale Ball Trail in the nearby Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Orlando, Florida

Magic Kingdom Park

Orlando is known as the Theme Park Capital of the World, and in May you’ll enjoy warm temperatures and fewer crowds than during peak summer season when you can enjoy the attractions at Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando Resort, and other popular parks. Orlando’s water parks, like Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon, are the perfect way to cool off in the warm May temperatures.

Besides the theme parks, Orlando offers outdoor activities such as hot air balloon tours over the Florida Everglades and nature walks in places like Lake Eola Park. Orlando hosts a variety of events and festivals in May, including the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival and the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival. Hotel rates are also often cheaper than in the summer, making the trip more worthwhile.

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Beautiful sunset in Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach’s average high temperature in May is in the mid-70s Fahrenheit, making for great beach weather without the oppressive heat and humidity of summer. The cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean are just starting to warm up, making it the perfect time to stroll the three-mile boardwalk, ride the waves, or simply relax on the wide, sandy beach.

Beach season has just begun, so you’ll find shorter lines, fewer crowds, and cheaper hotel rates than during peak summer months. May is also a great month to explore Virginia Beach’s coastal state parks, bike trails, and fantastic seafood restaurants serving fresh, locally caught seafood. Popular events like the Patriotic Festival and the East Coast Surfing Championships also begin in May.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach SkyWheel

May brings pleasant warmth to Myrtle Beach, with average highs around 80°F and lows around 65°F. Beach weather is perfect for soaking up the sun on the Grand Strand area’s 60 miles of sandy beaches. The ocean water also has time to warm up from the winter chill. Humidity is still relatively low in May before the muggy heat of summer sets in. This is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities, including golfing on the area’s renowned courses, walking or biking on the boardwalks, and water sports like jet skiing and parasailing.

Hotel rates are cheaper than during peak summer months, but the weather is still perfect for spending time on the beach. Popular events like the Carolina Country Music Festival and the Beach Bike Festival also draw large crowds in May. Families can avoid summer crowds at attractions like Ripley’s Aquarium and sample local cuisine at food festivals.
