Where would we go without public transportation? As more and more people consciously try to reduce their dependence on car travel to help our own health and the health of the planet, trains, buses and trams are literally on the brink of saving the world. He is a strong man.
Sure, a crowded bus during the morning commute isn’t very pleasant, but when exploring the world’s great cities, it’s the best way to discover new places through the eyes of a local. Some of the world’s best public transportation systems also double as cultural treasure hunts, making the everyday spectacular with sublime art and design.
To identify the cities with the best public transportation in the world, we surveyed more than 20,000 city residents in more than 50 cities around the world in 2023 to find out which cities have the best public transportation in the world. We asked a simple question: “Is it easy to get around?”
Many iconic networks weren’t quite successful. There was no room for Istanbul’s transcontinental ferries, the fairy-tale trams of Lisbon, Melbourne and Manchester, or Bangkok’s elevated Skytrain. However, in the cities covered, at least four out of five local residents had positive things to say about their respective cities. And they spread all over the world, from Montreal to Mumbai to Stockholm to Shanghai and even the United States. So, without further ado, these cities have the best public transportation in the world, according to locals.
