California is home to many luxury accommodations catering to glamorous tourists, and four recently opened hotels in the Golden State are currently ranked as some of the best in the world.
Travel + Leisure’s editors and travel experts compiled a list of 200 “soon to open” hotels and visited nearly 130 in 39 countries as part of our 2024 annual 100 Best New Hotels list. did.
Hotels are categorized into six categories: U.S. Resorts, Affordable Luxury Hotels, Splurge-worthy Stays, International Resorts, and Best City Hotels, and for the first time, T+L ranks the best new cruise ships.
Three of America’s top 13 resorts are in California. One of the three is in Southern California, one in Santa Barbara County, and the third in Northern California.

Starting locally, Pendry Newport Beach ranks 9th out of 13 Best Resorts in the United States. Located in the heart of the city’s Fashion Island, this hotel features a craft cocktail bar, a members-only club, a coastal Italian restaurant and a Topgolf Swing Suite.
“Spread across a 20-story tower, the hotel’s 295 guest rooms, including 114 suites, offer a sophisticated, contemporary feel and a spacious base from which to explore the area.” says Travel + Leisure.

Further north, the Inn at Mattei’s Tavern in Santa Barbara County finished 11th on the 2024 America’s Best Resorts list.
Part of the Auberge Resort Collection, The Inn at Matei’s Tavern is located in Los Olivos, ranked America’s Best Small Food and Culture Town by T+L in 2023.
The “fascinatingly symmetrical” 1880s building in the Santa Ynez Valley consists of a guesthouse, restaurant and bar. According to Travel + Leisure, the Inn at Mattei’s Tavern is also within walking distance of 27 wineries.

The third Golden State hotel on our list of America’s Best Resorts is Dawn Ranch in Sonoma County, which took the No. 3 spot.
