KATHMANDU, June 2: Over 90,000 tourists entered Nepal by air in May, up 16.1 percent from the same month last year. According to the Department of Immigration (DoT), 90,211 tourists arrived in Nepal by air in May.
India continues to be the largest supplier of tourists, with 38,288 Indian tourists in May, up 4.7 percent from a year ago. Next to India is the United States, with 8,527 American tourists, down just 0.2 percent from May last year.
China also made a major contribution, with 8,381 Chinese tourists visiting Nepal, a 79.6 percent increase over last year.
There were 3,458 tourists from Bangladesh, 2,802 from the UK and 2,194 from Australia. Tourists from Bangladesh increased by 59.8 percent, while tourists from the UK decreased by 4.3 percent.
Similarly, compared to May last year, Malaysian tourists increased by 37.3% to 1,814, German tourists by 1,392 and South Korean tourists by 1,373 in May this year. Tourists from Germany increased by 19.5% and those from South Korea by 32.1%.
The number of Russian tourists increased by 60.7% in May to 1,437.
Similarly, tourists from France reached 1,284, up 17 percent from May last year. Japan and Bhutan were also among the countries that sent more than 1,000 tourists. The number of Japanese tourists increased by 35 percent, while Bhutanese tourists increased by 49.6 percent.
Nepal Tourism Board spokesman Mani Raj Lamichhane said the number of tourists had increased due to effective promotion in the international market.
