Driven by India becoming one of the world’s leading travel destinations, India’s travel and tourism ecosystem has recorded impressive growth post-pandemic. It serves as an important source of foreign exchange, travel and tourism, and its contribution to the Indian economy in 2022 is estimated at Rs 15.9 trillion (US$ 191.25 billion). According to the latest assessment by NLB Services, a human resources solutions provider, it will reach $16.5 trillion by 2023.
NLB Services added that growing synergies in the sector have led to stable job creation in both Tier I and Tier II locations across the country.

Work during the coronavirus pandemic
NLB Services announced that in 2020, when the pandemic began, the tourism sector created 39 million jobs, accounting for 8% of the country’s total workforce.
After the post-pandemic recovery period, this sector was one of the fastest recovering. For comparison, the demand for human resources in the tourism sector is expected to surge by 44% in August 2023, with an additional 1.6 million jobs expected to be added in 2023.
As growth momentum continues, the travel and tourism sector is expected to add 58.2 million jobs nationwide by 2033, it added.

In terms of location, the top five states that have historically attracted domestic tourists include Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
Cities leading the employment growth include Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune and Kochi. Tier 2 cities, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh.
Over the next nine years, new jobs are also expected to be created in emerging cities and regions such as Gujarat, Lakshadweep and West Bengal.

Most in-demand roles
Key occupations that have experienced a year-on-year surge and will continue to see increased demand include sales (18% jump), business development (17% jump), chef (15% jump), travel consultant (15% jump), These include tour operators (up 15%). ), travel agents (jump 15%), hoteliers (jump 15%), guides (jump 20%), wildlife experts (jump 12%), transport operators (jump 15%) and more.
Looking at experience level, as of March 2024, 50% of online travel and tourism job postings were for entry-level or entry-level positions (0-3 years of experience). Mid-level roles (4-6 years of experience) and top management roles (15+ years of experience) accounted for 30% and 20% share of total demand, respectively.

The travel and tourism sector is also undergoing a major transformation, with many new subsets entering the new decade such as destination wedding travel, religious tourism, international tourism, adventure sports tourism, ecotourism, cultural tourism, and rural tourism. To address talent shortages and meet growing demand from tourists, companies are also adopting the gig model. Since January 2023, the travel and tourism industry has seen a 14% increase in jobs for jobs such as translators, photographers and tour guides, and is expected to increase by a further 18-20% over the next two years.
