Barcelona is one of Spain’s most exciting destinations to visit and is often the most affordable gateway to the country.
So the latest tourism report that a little-known beach city reigns supreme over Barcelona and other famous Spanish destinations is quite surprising.
Of course, this country is home to one of the best beach getaways in all of Europe, so it’s no surprise that travelers head to the Spanish coastline.
With a 51% increase in tourism, the beautiful coastal city of Benalmádena is sweeping Spain as the new trendy tourist destination.
Where is Benalmadena?
Benalmádena is a beautiful coastal city on Spain’s popular Costa del Sol, so its sudden rise in popularity is not at all surprising.
What is surprising is that it has surpassed other cities in terms of tourism, such as Barcelona and Benidorm.
The sunny Costa del Sol stretches for miles along Spain’s southern coast towards Gibraltar and is home to many idyllic vacation spots.
Málaga is best known as the region’s capital and is easily accessible as a small beach city with a population of just 68,000, just 40 minutes from Benalmádena.
The shining stars of the Costa del Sol
If you ask travelers in the past for their favorite places along the Costa del Sol, you’ll likely get a variety of answers: Malaga, Marbella, and even Torremolinos.
Well, the answer is very likely Benalmádena, and that’s no surprise. Overshadowed by Malaga’s greatness, it’s now Benalmádena’s time to shine with his 15 wonderful beaches to choose from.
From quiet and serene beaches to beaches packed with fun activities, you’re sure to find a beach that fits your vibe.
The best part is that the city’s beaches are well-maintained and famous for being clean.
Moreover, now that Benalmádena has become known, this is one of the best times to visit before it risks losing its unique charm and authenticity.
old town fun
Travelers marvel at the city’s quaint Old Town district (Benalmádena Pueblo) and its surrounding delights, which feel like an independent Andalusian village.
Away from the beach, visitors will find winding cobblestone streets lined with white buildings in the historic Santorini style, transformed into cozy boutique hotels and restaurants.
It has a very laid-back atmosphere, enjoys beautiful weather all year round, and you can sample wine and tapas while strolling through the charming streets.
Just down the road is the must-see Colomares Castle, which celebrates the life of famous explorer Christopher Columbus.
More than 700 years after his heyday, we’re not sure what to say about this man, but this castle is a must-see, and tours cost just $10.
Some of the best views in Spain
When you’re vacationing along the coast, you want the best views. Benalmádena has just the place.
Seeing beautiful beaches on land is one thing, but venturing towards Mount Kalamoro takes it to another level.
Teleferico Benalmádena offers visitors just enough fun to dine, hike and ride the funicular up and down the beautiful mountain.
Enjoy spectacular views from a variety of vantage points, including patio dining and mountain overhangs.
Popular theme parks to reopen
One of Benalmádena’s top attractions before the pandemic was Tivoli World, a decades-old theme park.
Tivoli World, beloved by locals as well as tourists from around the world, was one of the many business casualties around the world.
According to Spanish publication The Olive Press, plans are underway at full speed to reopen the park as soon as possible, although no official date has been set.
The park will no doubt be renovated after three years of neglect, but visitors will be able to enjoy thrilling rides like the Ferris wheel and the Torre de Caida Libre (Free Fall Tower), one of the park’s guest favorites. You can expect similar things, including rides.
This theme park remains closed for now, but wherever else you visit in Spain, remember that the country has put in place some new ground rules for all tourists .
