One of the most popular tourist attractions in the Mexican Caribbean region was recently awarded a high honor for its efforts to protect and preserve the cultural heritage of this region of Mexico.
The award goes to Grupo Xcaret, the holding company for the popular Xcaret Park in Mexico’s Caribbean Sea and the visionary architect behind this tourist attraction, beloved by many vacationers. Awarded to Miguel Quintana Paris.
high honor of tourism
This high international honor was presented by United Nations Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvi, who recognized the important contribution Grupo Xcaret has made to welcoming tourists to the Mexican Caribbean and improving the overall experience for family travelers. Awarded by Mr.
“Dear President of Grupo Xcaret, architect Miguel Quintana Paris, I always call you President, because you have built a truly extraordinary place. is one of my favorite destinations,” Polokashvili said in his report on the award. . “I deeply recognize and value his dedication and accomplishments, which is why I want to highlight his career as an inspiration to many in the tourism industry.”
“Our purpose is to make the planet happier by spreading great love for Mexico,” Quintana Paris said when accepting the honor.
He also noted the proud heritage of sustainability on display at Xcaret, in addition to the cultural contributions made to preserve ancient Mayan traditions and heritage.
eco controversy
Some of the articles written about the award were immediately reminiscent of the sharp criticism leveled at Xcaret by current Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador a year ago.
President López Obrador has been highly critical of the company’s environmental history in Yucatan, citing several problems that arose during the construction of Xcaret Park, called Xibalba, in Valladolid, Yucatan state.
“They did what they wanted with aquifers, underground rivers, and cenotes, and no one said anything. It completely changed the tide,” then-President López Obrador said.
Ironically, this nature reserve is named after the Mayan underworld, ruled by the Mayan god of death and his helpers.
Xcaret lottery
Even with harsh criticism of environmental destruction for the sake of tourism, it is difficult to deny the significant impact Xcaret Group has had on attracting and entertaining tourists to Mexico and the Caribbean.
As much as the Disneyland theme parks around the world attract people, many people don’t necessarily travel to the Mexican Caribbean to visit Xcaret. However, once you arrive, it becomes a favorite activity for many visitors to the area, especially families.
For many families, this is a fun and friendly introduction to cultural awareness and connection to Mayan culture, tradition, and heritage. That is what was recognized with the United Nations Award.
What travelers need to know
The United Nations award recognizes the steps the Xcaret Group is taking to protect the unique and special cultural heritage of the Maya people of Yucatan.
Xcaret is making a real difference in preserving culture and promoting tourism at the same time by introducing vacationing guests to tradition and heritage in a fun, theme park-like way.
There is a possibility that there will be a discussion about the environmental activities that the Xcaret Group is said to have taken in relation to tourism. The same argument could be made about the impact of the Mayan train on the region.
After all, the positive impact that both controversial projects will have on tourism is clearly not up for debate in the region.
