New regulations in the Balearic Islands are aimed at curbing drinking habits among tourists. The law will come into force from May 11 and ban the sale of alcohol after 9.30pm in a bid to control “excessive tourism” on popular party islands such as Ibiza and Mallorca.
The law bans drinking between 9.30pm and 8am in major party areas on both islands, including Palma and Magaluf on Mallorca and San Antonio on Ibiza. However, this ban does not apply to bars, restaurants, and clubs.
These rules are part of a larger effort to tackle unruly behavior and excessive drinking in tourist destinations. Violators who drink alcohol outside the permitted areas could be fined up to €1,500 (about £1,290), the BBC reports. The number of fines imposed on tourists will be tallied and shared with the appropriate embassies. Local governments also requested changes to the areas affected by the law.
The law restricts boat parties to coming within one nautical mile of affected areas and prohibits them from picking up or dropping off passengers at these locations.
The updated restrictions are expected to remain in force until at least December 2027, under a 2020 legislation dealing with “anti-social behavior”.
