Every city has its tourist attractions, and Amarillo is really known for a few. Two of them are considered major tourist attractions, and I would agree. One has an admission fee, and the other doesn’t.
So, before we delve into this, let’s clarify what exactly a tourist trap is.
A tourist trap isn’t just a place that is said to be a “must see.” For example, many people would consider the world famous Cadillac Ranch a “tourist trap.” However, all you need to get there is a can or two of spray paint. This is not the definition of a tourist trap.
It can be quite costly, and in the end you often feel like you aren’t getting your money’s worth.
Many Amarillo residents would say the Big Texan is the city’s top tourist draw, and it certainly ticks a lot of boxes. It’s nationally known for its “free 72-ounce steak,” but if you go there, you’ll know what you have to do to get it.
It’s a huge place with a gift shop, its own brewery, an outdoor seating area with giant chairs, and of course, not-so-cheap food. Yes, these are all tourist magnets. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just the way it is.
So the bigger question is this: what is the city’s second-biggest tourist draw? Wonderland was mentioned a few times, and Hodgetown actually got a mention or two as well, because baseball games are expensive to begin with these days, and I don’t know of any amusement parks that charge less than $50 per person for admission.
But don’t forget the criteria: Are you getting what you pay for financially? Let us know if you agree or can think of something else that would captivate visitors to Amarillo.
