Highlighting the theme ‘Plastic Free While Travelling’ and organising women friendly tour packages and eco-friendly programmes across the state, Kerala Responsible Tourism Mission Society (KRTMS) celebrated World Environment Day.
Several women-friendly tour operators have announced that they have decided not to use plastic products, especially bottles, during their trips.
Pointing out that environment conservation and tourism are inter-related, KRTMS CEO K. Rupeshkumar lauded the Responsible Tourism sector’s wide-ranging activities on the day. One of the women-friendly wings of the Responsible Tourism Society, Green Acres Farm in Kozhikode, planted saplings. At the organisation’s homestays and mud houses, staff have decided not to hand out plastic bottles and carrier bags to guests, he added, adding that instead, services will stick to eco-friendly materials.
Wayanad-based Chitrasaravam Tour Company and Kottayam’s Glass Roots Journeys have also made similar announcements. Besides, ‘Let’s Go For A Camp’ will only provide refillable bottles. Earthen Phul Villa in Kanthalur, Idukki and women-friendly tour company Escape Now have also announced plastic-free measures.
In Athirapally in Thrissur district, the Responsible Tourism Association ran a campaign promoting the use of menstrual cups instead of sanitary napkins; in Ponnani in Malappuram district, the focus was on providing shade to tourists; and in Kavanatinkara in Kottayam district, residents worked with the village council to plant saplings. Similar programmes were also held in Kasaragod, Idukki and Thiruvananthapuram.
Launched in 2008 to promote sustainable and inclusive tourism initiatives, Responsible Tourism in Kerala has now grown into a large grassroots-level movement with 25,188 registered units, of which 17,632 are women-owned or led.
