According to a study by the National Bank of Greece (NBG), tourism in Greece is expected to break visitor records in 2024, with visitor numbers expected to exceed 35 million, tovima.com reports.
Analysts from the National Bank of Greece (NGB) forecast that in 2024 the sector will reach a new record, with tourist numbers reaching 35 million (7% increase compared to 2023), and revenues per tourist will also improve, reaching around €22 billion (10% increase compared to 2023), and achieving an increased share of the Mediterranean market.
The survey found that all key indicators point to a bright outlook for Greece’s tourism industry, which is expected to get off to a strong start in 2024 with an annual increase of 24 percent, and is the country’s main economic sector.
The analysis found that future demand indicators for hotels in Greece are at historically high levels, with the optimistic outlook reflected in the record net employment figures from February to April (+980,000 compared to +90,000 in 2023).
NBG: Greek tourism industry suffers from hotel staff shortage
Meanwhile, during the summer months, large hotels and smaller accommodation establishments are experiencing a low supply of professional and highly trained hotel staff, while demand is growing due to the expected increase in overnight stays.
The data highlights that the hotel industry continues to face staffing challenges, with 80% of the industry reporting vacancies similar to or higher than 2023.
According to a survey by the National Bank of Greece (NBG), international air traffic recorded a notable increase compared to 2023.
A seasonal decrease is expected due to an increase in spring arrivals (around 20%).
Increase in planned seat numbers for June to October (+8%)
Strong demand from independent travelers (+14% bookings so far).
The survey highlights that Greek hotels appear to agree with the NBG’s assessment and are generally aware of current sustainability challenges, as well as the imminent risks posed by climate change and the consistently seasonal nature of growing tourist numbers.
