Tourism in Greater Miami and Miami Beach is booming and the region’s rich culture is garnering global attention. The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) reported impressive visitor numbers and economic impact during its annual State of the Travel and Tourism Industry presentation.
More than 27.2 million tourists are expected to visit Greater Miami and Miami Beach in 2023, generating an estimated $21.1 billion in spending, up 2% from last year. This equates to 17.3 million hotel room nights sold, up 0.3% from 2022’s impressive increase.
“When tourism thrives here, our multicultural community really thrives,” said David Whitaker, president and CEO of the GMCVB. “We effectively promote the vibrant diversity that makes Greater Miami and Miami Beach a unique destination.”
The positive effects of this tourism boom rippled throughout the local economy in 2023.
– Total economic impact of $30 billion
– Contributes $19 billion to the county’s GDP (9% of total GDP)
– $4.98 billion in tax revenue, saving households $2,233 per year
– Supporting over 200,000 jobs and paying $11 billion in wages
Innovative programming highlights Greater Miami’s rich cultural tapestry, and the award-winning Art of Black Miami platform celebrates 10 years of elevating Black artists and their impact on the cultural fabric of the community.
In 2024, Miami will be further boosted by global events such as the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, CONMEBOL Copa America, FIFA World Cup 2026, and the Latin Grammy Awards. The city’s culinary scene is also growing and attracting attention, with an increasing number of restaurants recognized by the Michelin Guide.
“Our commitment is to mature as a global tourism destination by continuing to showcase our diverse cultures through expanded programs, marketing and partnerships,” said GMCVB Board Chair Julissa Kepner.
GMCVB promotes small business, multicultural tourism development and an inclusive talent pipeline through initiatives such as the Tourism Business Enhancement Program, Career Track in Black Hospitality Initiative and Certified Autism Destinations.
Miami’s global appeal shows no signs of slowing in 2023, with Miami International Airport serving more than 52.3 million travelers, including 23.2 million international arrivals, an increase of 3.2%. The PortMiami, the cruise capital of the world, enjoyed its busiest season ever, welcoming 7.49 million cruise guests.
Greater Miami and Miami Beach ranked #1 in the U.S. for hotel occupancy in the first quarter of 2024. Numerous accolades have been received, including World Travel Awards, Travi Awards and TripAdvisor’s Best Destinations.
With a diverse blend of cultures, world-class beaches, cuisine, arts and entertainment, Greater Miami’s cultural diversity continues to drive tourism growth and international appeal.
