{KXLG – Brookings, South Dakota} The Brookings Tourism Bureau recently held a week-long celebration highlighting the role of the tourism industry in the city and across the state, during which four outstanding individuals and organizations were recognized with annual tourism awards.
South Dakota State University Senior Associate Athletic Director for Facilities and Operations Jeff Holm was presented with the Larson Family Tourism Champion Award. Known for his tireless efforts in promoting tourism, Holm and his team have created a welcoming environment for fans, college students and alumni on game day.
Dex Stewart, general manager of Hampton Inn & Suites, was presented with the Hospitality Hero Award. During his 15 years with Hampton Inn & Suites, Stewart established a high standard of customer service and satisfaction.
Led by Race Director Dani Vaughn, the Brookings Marathon is a Tourism Extra Mile Award winner. Now in its 55th anniversary, the marathon has brought hundreds of runners to the area and generated more than $14 million in economic impact since 1970.
Under the direction of Parks, Recreation and Forestry Commissioner Christine Zimmerman, the Larson Ice Center was named Tourism Organization of the Year. Known for its hockey tournaments, figure skating events and curling events, the center is a key player in attracting tourists during the winter months.
In addition to the awards ceremony, Visit Brookings engaged with more than 250 frontline workers during National Travel and Tourism Week, celebrating Brookings’ $124.7 million contributions to the tourism industry.
