ATHENS, Greece AP —
A missing American tourist has been found dead on the shores of a small Greek island west of Corfu, local media reported.
The man’s body was discovered on Sunday by another tourist on a fairly remote, rocky shore on the island of Matraki.
He had been reported missing on Thursday by his Greek-American host friends.
The tourist was last seen at a cafe on Tuesday with two female tourists, who have since left the island.
Further details about the victims, such as their names or hometowns, were not immediately released.
Matraki, with a population of 100, is a wooded island of 3.9 square kilometres (1.2 square miles) west of the better known island of Corfu.
It was the latest in a series of recent incidents in which tourists have been killed or gone missing on Greek islands.
Some, if not all, set out on the hike in extremely hot temperatures.
The 74-year-old Dutch tourist was found by a fire department drone on Saturday lying face down in a ravine, about 300 metres (330 yards) from where he was last seen last Sunday, and struggling to walk in the scorching heat.
Well-known British television presenter and author Dr Michael Mosley was found dead on the island of Symi last Sunday. The coroner determined he died the previous Wednesday, shortly after hiking through rugged, rocky terrain.
Two French tourists were reported missing on Friday from Sikinos, a relatively remote Cyclades island in the Aegean Sea with a permanent population of fewer than 400 people.
The two women, aged 64 and 73, left their respective hotels to meet.
On the island of Amorgos, also in the Cyclades, authorities continue to search for a 59-year-old tourist who has been reported missing since Tuesday after going hiking alone in extreme heat.
U.S. media identified the missing tourist as Albert Carivet, a retired Los Angeles County deputy sheriff from Hermosa Beach, California.
Deputy Mayor for Tourism Popi Despotidi told CNN on Wednesday that Kalibet has visited Amorgos “almost every year” for the past 10 years.
