BHOPAL: Against the beautiful backdrop of Sanchi Stupa, Pariatan Sakhi on Friday performed yoga to mark International Day of Yoga. The event was also held at other UNESCO World Heritage sites in Madhya Pradesh including Khajuraho, Bimbitka, Sanchi Stupa, Pachmarhi, Mandu and Gwalior. The programme showcased the integration of yoga with tourism. The event, known as Pariatan Sakhi, was organised by Madhya Pradesh Tourism (MPT) in collaboration with local women and aimed to promote women’s involvement in tourism. MPT’s Pariatan Sakhi scheme, which now involves over 2,500 trained women officials, aims to provide a safe and comfortable environment for women tourists. According to MPT officials, with the participation of over 5,000 local women, the event was organised at 50 tourist destinations to showcase the state’s rich culture and history and inspire others to visit these destinations. The event had a dual objective of celebrating International Yoga Day and offering participants an opportunity to explore and appreciate local heritage for the first time. The yoga sessions were conducted in collaboration with partner organisations as part of the Safe Tourism for Women project. Led by the MPT Board and supported by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India and Nirbhaya Fund, Ministry of Tourism, the Safe Tourism for Women initiative aims to increase the number of women tourists by connecting them with tourism related services and providing training in self-defence. The theme was ‘Yoga for Self and Society’, reflecting on individual and community wellbeing. Participants included MPTB’s project support organisations, local administration officials, hoteliers, school and college students, Paryatan Sakhis etc.
