Oliver is seeking a meeting with the tourism minister as part of his requests for the 2024 Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) convention.
The town has until June 21, 2024 to submit a full list of requests for meetings with the prime minister and other ministers.
Councillor Amy Grice was the only one on council to suggest meeting with the tourism minister, noting that a meeting would be beneficial, especially in regards to trying to identify opportunities to diversify tourism in the South Okanagan.
Diversifying the South Okanagan’s tourism needs was a request made by the Town of Oliver in a Southern Interior Municipalities Association (SILGA) resolution at its 2024 Annual General Meeting and Convention held in early May.
Oliver’s resolution would see the state “make financial investments in municipalities to identify ways to diversify communities impacted by tourism.”
The town is hoping to meet with the tourism minister to highlight the theme of diversifying tourism needs in small and rural communities.
Ministerial meetings at UBCM will be in person and will last 15 minutes, and Councillor Oliver was instructed to let town staff know before the deadline if he felt further meetings were necessary.
The 2024 UBCM Convention will be held in Vancouver from September 16th to 20th.
