More than 40,000 visitors attended the K-Tourism Roadshow in Paris last weekend, promoting Korean tourism in line with the Olympics opening in the city next month.
The two-day promotional event, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization, was held at Paris’ largest shopping mall, Westfield Forum des Halles. The event featured experiential activities that offered a glimpse into the pleasures of Korea, especially its food and cosmetics.
The K-Tourism Roadshow featured a variety of experiences, including a K-pop cover dance session, a personal colour analysis, a make-up show and a travel talk session. The Ministry of Culture said street food and traditional drink tasting events were particularly popular.
According to the ministry, there were also long queues for people to take quizzes, have their photos taken with hanbok (traditional Korean dress) filters and receive gifts.
The event also featured an open competition, where participants were asked to create a short video about why they want to visit Korea, using photos and hand-drawn drawings of Korean landscapes, nature and food. The winner, Mortellier Souvenir, won a round-trip ticket from Paris to Incheon.
The Ministry of Culture will put up advertisements promoting Korean tourism in 190 locations across Paris at the same time as the Olympics begin. It will also open a “Korea House” to host various Korean events during the Olympics.
A total of 133,000 people visited South Korea from France last year, a 20% increase from 2019, before the spread of COVID-19. According to the Ministry of Culture, the number of French visitors from January to April this year also increased by 33% compared to the same period last year.
A ministry official said, “French people travel a lot, but not many have traveled to Korea, so Korea is a market with great growth potential.” He added, “We will strengthen our marketing strategy in France so that more French people can visit Korea.”
