The UK has announced its ‘no travel’ list of destinations from which tourists are banned. As tourists and holidaymakers jet off from the UK to all corners of the country this year, some countries and destinations have been more notable and predictable than others.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs now strictly advises against all travel, except essential travel, to 24 countries and territories on the “blacklist”: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Chad, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Mali and Niger.
Other countries on the list include North Korea, the Palestinian Territories, Russia, Somalia, Somaliland, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela and Yemen. In a warning to Britons, the British Foreign Office said Afghanistan presented a “precarious security situation” and that it was extremely dangerous to travel there.

“British nationals are also at “an increased risk of being detained” in Afghanistan.” The British Foreign Office has also advised against travelling to Russia due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, with the situation in Russia described as “unpredictable”.
It’s important to check the Foreign Office travel warnings before traveling abroad. Be aware that travelling against Foreign Office advice may invalidate your travel insurance and in some cases you may not be able to get consular support.
Responding to the list, one Brit said: “My wife and I visited St. Petersburg in 2019. It was an amazing place and the people were so friendly. The Hermitage, churches and cathedrals were breathtaking. We also visited the Summer Palace which is a must see. We only stayed for four days and would love to go back.”
The second agreed, saying: “The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood on Naberezhnaya Kanara Griboyedov Street in St. Petersburg. Once this war is over, St. Petersburg should be on everyone’s list of must-visit places.”
“Pretoria, Durban, Caracas and Rio all have a crime index of 81, while Marseille has the worst in Europe at 65. London is in the middle at 55 and even Coventry has a high crime index,” wrote another.
