Patricia de Lille has been reappointed as South Africa’s Minister of Tourism following the announcement of a new government by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The decision comes at a crucial time for the country’s tourism industry, which is showing strong signs of post-pandemic recovery.
International tourism is expected to fully recover in 2024, and South Africa’s tourism industry is well poised to take full advantage of growing global demand and improved air connectivity. The country has seen a significant increase in flight routes and frequencies for major international airlines, making it more accessible for international travellers.
The first four months of 2024 have already shown promising results, with international tourist numbers increasing by a significant 11.1% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching a total of 3.2 million.
De Lille’s reappointment is seen as a move to maintain continuity in tourism policy and build on the momentum gained in recent months. His ministry is expected to focus on sustainable tourism, improving infrastructure and strengthening South Africa’s competitiveness as a global travel destination.
