ZANESVILLE, Ohio – Muskingum County experienced $272 million in economic impact from tourism in 2023.
TourismOhio recently released an economic impact report.
Kerry Ashby, deputy director of the Zanesville Muskingum Convention and Visitors Bureau, said she’s excited to see those numbers increase.
“That’s a 6 percent increase over last year and a 5 percent increase over the year before that,” Ashby said, “and the year before that it was up 10 percent. When we presented these numbers to public officials and tourism bureaus, one of the questions they asked was, ‘How does this compare to last year?’ We’ve seen significant growth over the past few years.”
Of the 18 counties in southeast Ohio, Muskingum County ranks third, ahead of Hocking County.
Ashby said Muskingum County also has the most employers in the region.
“We have over 3,200 employees that work specifically in tourism and they too are impacted by the tourism industry in Muskingum County,” Ashby said. “It’s actually No. 1 in southeast Ohio. It’s a really great statistic, a great number. It tells you why tourism is so important. It’s an economic tool, an economic driver and it has a huge impact on Muskingum County.”
