A new survey has revealed the top cities in the US most popular with tourists looking to enjoy all the culinary delights.
The study, by social casino website Hello Millions, analyzed 199 US cities that the US International Trade Administration lists as the most visited cities in the US, along with the number of food-related Instagram and TikTok hashtags in those cities. Hashtags featured in the study included “#[city]foodie”, “#[city]restaurant”#[city]For example, “placestoeat.” We then added up the number of hashtags on both social media platforms and ranked the most popular hashtags.
According to social media popularity, New York City is by far the best city in America for food tourism, with hashtags related to the city’s restaurants and food reaching a staggering 12.5 million across Instagram and TikTok.
According to the latest figures from the New York State Comptroller’s Office, New York City was home to 23,650 restaurants and food establishments in 2019, providing endless culinary experiences for tourists and locals alike. It would take a foodie nearly 65 years to dine at every restaurant and food establishment, even if they visited one per day.
Los Angeles ranks second on the list of the best US travel destinations for food lovers. Not only does the city attract tourists who want to experience the lives of the rich and famous, but research shows that the city has over 5.3 million food-related hashtags. From the traditional American burger to the city’s world-famous taco scene, Los Angeles offers some of the best dining experiences in the US.
Coming in at number three on the list of America’s best food cities is Chicago. The city is known worldwide for its signature deep-dish pizza, and the study found that there are more than 4.1 million posts on Instagram and TikTok with hashtags related to restaurants in the Chicago, Illinois city.
Houston, the first of three Texas cities to be named among the top 20 foodie cities in the U.S., ranked fourth in the national rankings. According to the findings, foodies are eager to share their favorite foods, with more than 3.1 million hashtags on Instagram and TikTok, including #AustinFood and #AustinRestaurants.
Rounding out our list of the top five foodie destinations in the US is tourist magnet Miami, Florida. The city is known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife, but research has also revealed that Miami is also popular for its cuisine. The study found that there are over 2.7 million hashtags relating to food establishments in the city. Plus, TripAdvisor has awarded over 30 restaurants in the city with its “Traveler’s Choice 2023” stamp, making it clear that the city is a popular choice for foodie tourists.

Dallas is the sixth most popular city in the US among food lovers, with the North Texas city having over 2.25 million posts with hashtags related to its food scene, according to the study.
Las Vegas follows in seventh place on the ranking, and when food and restaurant-related hashtags that mention the city are combined, the study found a staggering 2.15 million posts showcasing the cuisine served in “Sin City,” as the city is affectionately known.
Washington DC and Atlanta rank 8th and 9th in food in the US, respectively, with just under 2 million posts, with over 1.9 million posts with hashtags related to eateries in each city, while Seattle lands a respectable spot in the top 10 with 1.7 million posts tagged with places to eat and specialties in the Northwestern city.
Commenting on the findings, Joerg Nottebaum of Hello Millions said: “Food tourism has long been a global travel trend, but it’s more popular than ever, especially with the growth of social media and content such as ‘where to eat in…’ videos that go viral within hours. This research therefore provides important insight into which US cities are attracting the most foodies online.”
