During a Special Fiscal Court hearing Wednesday evening, it was announced that the Carter County Tourism Bureau had received a warning for insufficient funds in its account.
Chris Perry, the commission’s interim treasurer and spokesman, said the commission notified the fiscal court of the former treasurer’s resignation after receiving a call from a local bank on June 20 stating that “the commission’s account had an insufficient balance.”
Perry said Kentucky State Police are investigating, and Carter County Attorney Brian Bays said he would not comment further until the investigation is completed, which is expected to be completed “in the coming weeks.”
Bays and Perry told the Daily Independent that residents should not lose confidence in the board’s accountability to Carter County residents.
“The Tourism Commission has done some really great things in this county,” Perry said. “Having led the largest tourist attraction in the county (Carter’s Caverns), I can tell you that we’ve seen the Tourism Commission at its best.”
“I was lucky to have some cheques coming in at the courthouse so I was able to put them in my account and get over my overdraft and get myself out of trouble,” he said.
The Tourism Committee has six active members and meetings are scheduled for the first Monday of each month.
“We don’t know what the outcome will be. I have full confidence in the tourism board,” Bays said.
