I live near a lake, so there are a lot of tourists visiting my city during the summer.
The small town I live in has been undergoing a major downtown renovation in recent years, and a small street in the downtown area has received a much-needed facelift, which has led to more people visiting the area.
This is great for business, but of course more people means more cars… and in the summer, more boats. So, naturally, this leads some in the community to take to social media to air their frustration with it all.
I think this is a bit ridiculous because our town shouldn’t overlook the potential for growth.
But no matter where you look in the world, there are people who oppose it and others who understand its value and necessity and welcome it. There are many people all over the world who make their living off tourists’ money.
Many Barcelona residents are fed up with the city’s housing crisis and recently took to the streets to protest against a major tourism problem, with some even throwing water at tourists.
But there are people in Barcelona who depend on tourism for their income, as are many other destinations now affected by overtourism, including Amsterdam, Venice and Hawaii.
Governments face tough challenges in these big cities, and while my small town will never experience the same level of hardship as them, there is one thing in common: there will always be residents who oppose tourists.
