PUNE: A landslide at the main pass of Shivneri Fort caused boulders to fall from the cliff above, leading the district administration to ban tourism till July 31 for safety reasons.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident, which occurred between Maha Darwaja and Parwanagi Darwaja, as there were very few tourists on the road at the time.
Just as the duo passed the spot, a landslide occurred behind them, narrowly escaping damage. The accident occurred between Maha Darwaja and Parwanagi Darwaja.
The sudden landslide caused confusion for tourists at the fort for some time. Entry into the fort is banned till July 31, but eager tourists continue to visit.
During the monsoon season, there is a risk of landslides at forts, hills, waterfalls etc. Despite a ban, tourists visit these dangerous places, often putting their lives at risk.
The cliff on which the fort of Shivneri Fort, the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, is situated has collapsed, hence, tourists visiting Shivneri Fort should exercise caution, as per the appeal of the Pune District Commissioner.
After the landslide, several stones and debris fell, scattering boulders on the sidewalk. The strong stone protection wall built by the archaeology department on the sidewalk was also damaged, leaving gaps in the railings, where temporary branches were placed for safety.
Commenting on the incident, Babasaheb Jungle, assistant surveyor at the Central Archaeological Department, said, “We have reported the matter to higher offices and will take necessary precautions after investigating whether there are any other dangerous cliffs.”
“Both Lenyadri and Shivneri are hilly tourist spots. A month ago, boulders fell on the steps of Lenyadri due to monkey activity. At that time, we had written to the Geological Survey of India regarding inspection of the dangerous cliffs,” said Babasaheb Jungle, research assistant at the Archaeology Department of India, Junnar.
We have now also informed them about the Shivneri investigation. Suggestions for necessary safety measures will be conveyed to higher offices for implementation.”
