June 13 (THEWILL) – Nigeria, along with 11 other elected African member states, participated in the 121st session of the United Nations Tourism Executive Council in Barcelona, Spain.
In a statement, the Ministry of Tourism said the event “further strengthens Nigeria’s commitment to promoting global tourism” and that the Minister of Tourism, Laura Adejong, represented the country in the event.
The Council meets every two years and serves as the governing body of UN Tourism. In collaboration with the Secretary-General, the Council is responsible for making key decisions regarding various aspects of the organization and its work, which are then submitted to the General Assembly for ratification.
The ministry further revealed that Nigeria’s presence on the Executive Council “underscores the country’s growing influence in promoting tourism as a key driver of economic growth, cultural exchange and sustainable development.”
The Minister of Tourism, Dr Lola Adejong, expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s role in the Council and reiterated the country’s commitment to contribute to the global tourism agenda.
“Our participation in the UN Tourism Council is a testament to Nigeria’s vibrant tourism sector and our dedication to fostering international cooperation in tourism. We look forward to working closely with other member states to promote sustainable tourism practices that benefit all,” she said.
The Minister further highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts towards strengthening tourism infrastructure, enhancing tourist experience and preserving cultural and natural heritage.
According to the Minister, Nigeria’s active participation in the United Nations Tourism Council will further these efforts and provide valuable opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange with other leading countries in the tourism sector.
Ade John stressed that as the country “embarks on a new chapter in UN tourism, it remains committed to leveraging its rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes and hospitable spirit to attract tourists from around the world and contribute to the growth and sustainability of the global tourism industry.”
