Data shows strong growth, particularly in the Caribbean and Central America
A new report released today by Amadeus in collaboration with the United Nations Tourism Organization shows demand for travel to destinations across the Americas is increasing.
“Travel Insights 2024: Focus on the Americas, May to August 2024” is a global tourism report focused on the Americas and its subregions, North America, South America, Central America, and the Americas. This is the second in a series of reports providing insight into Caribbean Sea.
According to data from the United Nations Tourism Office, an estimated 1.3 billion foreign tourists were recorded worldwide in 2023, an increase of 34% compared to the number of tourists in 2022. Additionally, forward-looking data for 2024 suggests that demand will remain strong. International tourist arrivals to the Americas in 2023 reached 90% of pre-pandemic levels.

Looking ahead, Amadeus data shows that searches1 for travel from May to August 2024 increased by 132% compared to the same search period in 2023. Air travel metrics for the same search period show that airlines are responding to this increased demand for travel. Air transport capacity from May to August increased by 111% compared to 2023 capacity.
Continued growth in the Americas
Travel volumes remain strong, with the US, UK and Brazil being the top markets for those looking to travel to the Americas between May and August 2024. North America accounted for the highest percentage of total searches of any subregion in the Americas during the search period, and ranks in the top three destinations searched for by travelers worldwide (New York, Toronto, and Los Angeles).
Average hotel occupancy across the Americas remained at the same level as 2023 from May to August. However, occupancy is expected to increase as peak travel season approaches and last-minute booking patterns increase.
The report highlights several insights for the subregion for the May to August 2024 search period, including:
North America – For North America, the top markets for travel searches are the US, UK, and Brazil. However, air searches from China and Japan for travel to North America are on the rise. Central America – The largest market for travel searches to Central America is the United States (followed by Canada and the United Kingdom). Costa Rica remains the most searched destination within the region. Based on searches, South America – Argentina and Brazil are also increasing in popularity as destinations compared to his 2023. Buenos Aires, São Paulo, and Santiago are the top three destinations searched by travelers in the Americas looking for a vacation. Caribbean – The top markets for Caribbean travel searches are the United States, Argentina, and France, with the most searched destination being Punta Cana.
