An American tourist was killed and his wife seriously injured Tuesday while relaxing in a hot tub at a private Mexican resort, after authorities said they likely received electrocution from faulty equipment.
The Sonora State Prosecutor’s Office said a 43-year-old man, identified only as Jorge G., of El Paso, Texas, died at about 10 p.m. at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Peñasco, and Lizette Z. suffered serious, life-threatening injuries, according to KTSM.
Lizette Z. has been flown to the United States and is in critical condition, the station reported.
A Texas man has died after being electrocuted, according to Mexican authorities.
The wife suffered burns and is believed to have received an electric shock, possibly caused by faulty wiring, according to the prosecutor’s office.
According to the DA’s office, a witness who knew the couple said she saw them in an outdoor hot tub but neither of them were moving.
When passers-by tried to help the couple, she was shocked and was forced to call for help.
The man’s wife was in critical condition.
The cause of death has not been officially determined, according to the El Paso Times.
This incident is currently under investigation.
Sara Gaitan Perez, an Arizona woman staying at the resort, told the Arizona Daily Star that she and others tried to help the victim, but the man did not have a pulse when they arrived.
“We had just come from the pool and my husband and son had been in the exact same (hot tub) about an hour before,” she told the paper.
The resort could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
