Amsterdam has banned hotel development as part of a strategy to combat mass tourism, writes global tourism reporter Dawit Habtemariam.
Amsterdam’s city government has announced that the Dutch capital will no longer issue new hotel permits. The only exception is if another hotel in the city closes and no additional beds are available. Habtemariam pointed out that Amsterdam authorities are trying to limit annual stays in the city to 20 million people.
New hotel regulations are Amsterdam’s latest attempt to deter mass tourism. The city raised the tourist tax by 5 percentage points earlier this year.
Next, Hyatt is stepping up efforts to attract Indian leisure travelers, writes India reporter Bulbul Dhawan.
Hyatt CEO Mark Hopramazian said India’s leisure travel market is primarily driven by domestic travelers and the company is looking to open 50 more hotels in 28 markets in India. He said that The company currently operates his 50 hotels in his 17 markets in India. Khopramadian added that there is growing interest in investing in India’s hospitality industry.
Finally, Apple is bringing wireless streaming technology to hotel rooms for the first time as part of a partnership with IHG Hotels & Resorts, writes travel technology reporter Justin Dawes.
Apple’s Airplay technology is now available in guest rooms at more than 60 IHG ​​properties across North America. Airplay allows a guest to stream content from her iPhone or iPad to her LG TV in her hotel room. IHG executives said the company aims to create a “home away from home” experience that many guests aspire to.
