ATHENS, Greece — A missing American tourist has been found dead on the shores of a small Greek island west of Corfu, local media reported.
The man’s body was found Sunday by another tourist on a remote, rocky shore on the island of Matraki. The man had been reported missing on Thursday by his Greek-American host friend. The tourist was last seen at a cafe on Tuesday with two female tourists who have since left the island.
Further details about the victims, such as their names or hometowns, were not immediately released.
Matraki, population 100, is a wooded island of 1.2 square miles west of the better known island of Corfu.
It was the latest in a series of recent deaths and disappearances of tourists on the Greek islands, some – but not all – of whom were out hiking in sweltering heat.
The 74-year-old Dutch tourist was found by a fire department drone on Saturday lying face down in a ravine, about 330 yards from where he was last seen last Sunday, and struggling to walk through the scorching heat.
Well-known British television presenter and author Dr Michael Mosley was found dead on the island of Symi last Sunday. The coroner determined he died the previous Wednesday, shortly after hiking through rugged, rocky terrain.
