BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Regional tourism bureaus including Warren County and surrounding areas are teaming up to launch the first-ever Western Kentucky Wine Trail. At its meeting Wednesday night, Newport City Council announced its intention to establish a Tourism Improvement District, which would allow special assessments for lodging and provide funding for Discover Newport tourism marketing efforts. The City Council voted to hold a public hearing on the petition to establish the district at its July 24 meeting. Tourism in the Windsor-Essex region has seen a strong recovery since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to leaders of Tourism Windsor-Essex Pelly Island (TWEPI). TWEPI reported at its annual meeting on Thursday that tourism levels in the region have recovered to 98% of pre-pandemic levels. In 2023, the region is expected to welcome 5.6 million tourists, contributing approximately $856 million to the local economy and supporting an estimated 11,000 jobs. Tony Evers and Wisconsin Tourism Commissioner Ann Sayers said Wisconsin’s tourism industry will see a record economic impact in 2023, reaching $25 billion in total economic impact, surpassing 2022’s previous record of $23.7 billion.
