Florida’s proposed vacation rental bill, SB 280, is causing significant concern across the state, especially among vacation rental owners and advocates. Gia Arvin, President of Florida Realtors®, highlighted several important issues with this bill that could harm Florida’s tourism industry. Irvin highlighted a concerning provision in the bill, noting that it allows local governments to impose unspecified fees on property owners for processing registration applications. “We may charge property owners a reasonable fee to process registration applications, but there is no clear limit on that fee,” Irvin explained. The concept of a tourism tax is not new. City taxes have long been the norm in many European countries, including Greece, Spain, and Germany, and hotel taxes are the norm in many destinations, including states in the United States. The impact of COVID-19 on the travel industry has been severe, with hotels, restaurants and hospitality venues closed, people who made their living from tourism suddenly facing huge losses, and governments relying on development and maintenance. The funds were depleted. As a result, while travel continues to normalize after the pandemic, many countries have decided to introduce tourism taxes to…

The Canary Islands has become overcrowded with holidaymakers heading for Tenerife’s iconic Teide volcano after authorities told Britons looking for a cheaper holiday to go elsewhere. I came across some graffiti saying thatProtesters took to the streets of the Atlantic Islands on Saturday, chanting “Canariastieneunlimite” (translated into English as “Canary Islands have a limit”).Yesterday morning, the same letters appeared painted in white on the pavement of one of the access roads to the 12,188-foot Mount Teide, Spain’s highest mountain and a must-see tourist attraction on Tenerife.Another message painted…
Amsterdam Amsterdam has long tried to shake off a reputation for rowdy boy-partying, drugs and sex that was blamed in part on an influx of around 20 million tourists a year. In 2023, they launched an online campaign aimed at discouraging young British men from traveling to Amsterdam to get high and drunk, urging them, in typically Dutch blunt fashion, to “stay away” or risk arrest. Amsterdam announced last week that it would ban the construction of new hotels and halve the number of river cruise ships in the city within five years. The government also decided last year to…
