Azerbaijan actively participated in the 12th Tourism Ministers’ Conference hosted by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Khiva, Uzbekistan, from May 31 to June 2, focusing on “developing a sustainable and resilient tourism industry,” AzerNews reported, citing the Azerbaijan State Tourism Organization.
The Azerbaijani delegation held fruitful discussions during the event. Of particular note was the fact that a meeting of high-level officials of OIC member states was held in parallel with the conference. On June 2, the ministerial meeting concluded with the transfer of the chairmanship to Uzbekistan.
At the meeting, Kanan Gulzade, Advisor to the Head of the National Tourism Organization, highlighted Azerbaijan’s growing tourism connectivity within the OIC framework. He noted that 43 percent of tourists who visited Azerbaijan in the first four months of this year came from OIC member states. Gulzade highlighted Azerbaijan’s rich tourism potential and underlined the government’s dedicated efforts towards developing this sector. He further outlined the great strides made to restore tourism potential, especially in the territories liberated from occupation, including the protection of Islamic heritage.
Gulzadeh also mentioned Azerbaijan’s hosting of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in November, highlighting its huge impact on the tourism industry and its role in the global climate change discussions.
The conference identified notable Islamic world tourism cities for the coming years, including Darak in Senegal in 2025, Cairo in Egypt in 2026 and Lahore in Pakistan in 2027.
