Tourism in Bhutan has seen a surge with the introduction of a visa-free travel program for nationals of Bangladesh, India and the Maldives. The initiative aims to attract more visitors and boost the country’s tourism industry. The Buddhist kingdom on the eastern edge of the Himalayas is renowned for its monasteries, fortresses (dzongs) and dramatic landscapes, ranging from subtropical plains to rugged mountains and valleys. Peaks such as Jomolhari, 23,320 feet (7,326 meters) in the High Himalayas, are popular trekking destinations.
In 2024, Bhutan welcomed 25,000 tourists, with India being its largest market. March 2024 was the third busiest month since the country reopened, with 14,822 visitors. Over the past eight months, the top 10 destinations for tourists have come from countries such as India, the US, Malaysia, the UK and Vietnam.

According to Indian media reports, MakeMyTrip has launched a new weekly charter flight service connecting Mumbai and Bhutan as part of holiday packages. This is in response to the growing popularity of Bhutan among Indian travellers, with searches on the platform growing 200% year-on-year. The flights, operated by Dulquior and Bhutan Airlines, will operate from Mumbai and Bangalore to Paro, with 12 flights booked between April 27 and June 2, each carrying 120-130 passengers. Dulquior offers direct flights from Paro to various Asian destinations, including Bangkok, Delhi, Kolkata, Kathmandu, Dhaka, Singapore, Mumbai and Guwahati.
