May 5, 2024, 1:38 pm · California reported record spending by tourists last year as the Golden State’s tourism industry completed its recovery from the pandemic.
Governor Gavin Newsom and Visit California CEO Caroline Betata today announced that California travel spending will reach a record high of $150.4 billion in 2023, surpassing 2019’s previous record. It was announced that the total amount exceeded $144.9 billion. This was the last full year before the pandemic shut down tourist destinations. across the state and country.
Spending will increase 5.6% from 2022, and state officials said California “continues to hold the largest share of the domestic tourism market.”
Newsom announced the numbers during a social media photo shoot atop the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco Bay.
“From our world-famous coastline to the world’s tallest trees to our iconic cities and theme parks, California is here to stay,” Newsom said. “Visitors from all over the world come here to experience the wonders of the Golden State, boosting our economy and creating good-paying jobs for years to come.”
Regarding these theme parks, Disney and Universal have reported significant increases in attendance and spending at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, and Universal Studios Hollywood over the past year, and Universal executives points out that in Hollywood, attendance continues to increase even more than a year after the debut. Super Nintendo World’s popularity propelled the park to an all-time record.
These three parks consistently lead California theme park attendance. We’re still waiting on published numbers for 2023, but according to the same year’s TEA/AECOM Theme Index Report, Disneyland will attract more than 16 million visitors in 2022, DCA will attract more than 9 million visitors, and the More than 8 million people visited Universal Studios Hollywood.
Other attractions in the state include theme parks such as Knott’s Berry Farm and SeaWorld San Diego, and Yosemite National Park and Joshua Tree National Park, which attract more than 3 million paid visitors annually.
