Badlands National Park: Home to the World’s Richest Fossils
A must-do on any national park tour is a trip to South Dakota, where some of the world’s richest fossils are found.
“It’s an incredibly vast landscape,” Ray said. “It feels as if you’re not on Earth, but on some kind of alien planet. But there’s some truth to this, as much of this terrain can’t be found anywhere else on the blue planet.” .”

Grand Canyon National Park: 1.2 billion years of change
Carved by the rushing waters of the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona is considered one of the world’s driest examples of eroded land.
The canyon is vast, 447 miles long with an average depth of 4,000 feet from east to west, and 6,000 feet at its deepest point. One section is 29 miles wide.
“Over 1.2 billion years, the Grand Canyon has undergone many changes,” said Joel Baird of Grand Canyon National Park. “(The observation area) is at an elevation of 7,000 feet. The Colorado River is at about 2,500 feet. So there’s a rich biodiversity at about 5,000 feet.”
