Easter this year falls on Sunday (April 17th). And whether you’re planning to commemorate the holiday with a visit from the Easter Bunny or a family egg hunt, it’s helpful to know which offices and services will be open this weekend.
The date of Easter changes each year between March 22nd and April 25th. This means that the holiday falls on the first Sunday after the vernal equinox or the subsequent full moon.
Good Friday is always the Friday before Easter Sunday, and in 2022 it falls on April 15th. Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday and is celebrated as a holiday in many countries, but not in the United States.

Unlike Christmas and Thanksgiving, Good Friday and Easter Sunday are not federal holidays. On federal holidays, most non-essential government offices are closed and many federal employees across the country are entitled to paid time off.
Still, many banks, schools and post offices across the country will have different opening hours or be closed, especially since Easter always falls on a Sunday. Good Friday is also recognized as a state holiday in several states, and many courthouses and state government offices will be closed.
Here’s what to expect this weekend.
Easter weekend hours: Walmart, McDonald’s, and Starbucks are open, but Costco, Target, and Lowe’s are closed.

What will be open and closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday this year?
Banks: Many banks, including Wells Fargo and Bank of America, do not recognize Easter as a bank-wide holiday. However, many branches are often closed on Sundays. Please contact your local branch for possible changes to Good Friday opening hours.
Postal Service: The United States Postal Service does not recognize Easter or Good Friday as USPS holidays. Normal service should be available, but we recommend checking your local office hours. Especially since many places are closed on Sunday, regardless of this weekend’s holiday. FedEx and UPS will be open on Good Friday, but most will be closed on Easter, with the exception of services such as FedEx Custom Critical and UPS Express Critical.
Government offices and courts: Neither Easter nor Good Friday are federal holidays, so federal courthouses and government buildings must be open as usual, although many are typically closed on weekends. However, several states in the United States recognize Good Friday as a holiday. Courts and state offices in Connecticut, Texas, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, and North Dakota are closed or have reduced hours. Stock Market: The stock market is always closed on weekends, but Good Friday is a holiday. The NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will be closed.
National Parks: Many year-round national parks are open this weekend, but some may be closed on Sunday. Check opening hours before planning your trip.
Schools: Regardless of this weekend’s holidays, most (if not all) schools across the country are closed on Sunday. Good Friday holidays vary by school district. Some schools, such as Chicago Public Schools, are making the week leading up to Easter Sunday their spring break this year. Check with your local district.
Trash: Some trash and recycling collections may be postponed or moved to another day to account for weekends. Please check with your local provider.
Grocery and retail stores: Many grocery and convenience stores will be open on Easter, including CVS and Walmart. Other stores, including Target and Costco, are also scheduled to close Sunday. Check local listings for modified hours and see the complete list here.
Restaurants: Most restaurants will also be open, including chains like Applebee’s and Denny’s. Business hours may vary. Please check with your local location.
