The travel and tourism sector has changed dramatically over the past two decades, including adventure travel as a new dimension. Adventure tourism, as defined by the Adventure Travel Trade Association, is a rapidly expanding and dynamic sector of the tourism industry that involves physical exertion, cultural exchange, and outdoor exploration.

Indiatoday.in spoke to Rama Mahendru, India Country General Manager, Intrepid Travel. He says, “Adventure tourism is all about adventure. Many would argue that this is a very broad term and subjective. ” The tourism industry is an example of niche tourism, but it is growing rapidly. There are many different types of activities and trips that fall under that category, and it is gaining popularity because it can empower people. Whether you go on an animal safari, whitewater raft, or climb a high peak, you value independence and a closer connection to nature.

“India’s adventure tourism industry is expected to grow significantly in the coming years due to the government’s aggressive plans to make the country a global hub for adventure travel. By 2047, the tourism economy will reach $10 trillion, and adventure tourism will contribute $800 billion to this goal. As a result of the growth trajectory, we expect many professional opportunities in this sector,” said Rama.

This requires welcoming 20 million foreign tourists, 80 million domestic adventure travelers and generating US$90 billion in foreign exchange. Ultimately, the rapid growth of this sector will provide India with a wide range of career and employment opportunities.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in a field related to tourism, environmental science, hospitality management, or a specific adventure activity. Certain activities and roles require specialized qualifications, training courses, or workshops, such as wilderness first aid and CPR, lifeguarding, and certain guide qualifications from recognized organizations (such as the Professional Mountain Guides Association). There may be cases.

Technical skills:

Depending on the role, technical skills and proficiency in equipment operation, navigation, safety protocols, and risk management may be required. Examples include becoming proficient in the use of GPS devices, ropes and harnesses, kayaks, or specialized equipment for adventure activities. Strong communication skills, leadership abilities, problem-solving skills, and adaptability are often highly valued in roles that involve leading, directing, and coordinating adventure experiences. Language skills: Proficiency in languages ​​relevant to the destination or customer base is an advantage, especially for roles that involve international tourism or multicultural environments. ”

Reward:

Starting salaries and potential earnings in adventure tourism vary widely depending on factors such as job role, experience level, location, employer, and specific niche within the industry. Here’s a general overview: Entry-level positions in adventure tourism may offer a starting salary of around INR300,000 to INR400,000 per year above minimum wage, depending on the role and geographic location. Guides, instructors, and other front-line positions may start at the lower end of the pay range, especially for seasonal or part-time roles. Starting salaries may be higher for positions that require specialized skills, certifications, and education, such as diving instructors, mountaineering guides, and adventure travel consultants. Adventure tourism workers can expect to advance to mid-level positions with higher salaries due to their experience and proven competency in their role. Mid-level adventure tourism professionals such as senior guides, experienced instructors, and adventure travel planners can earn salaries ranging from INR 500,000 to INR 700,000 per year, depending on factors such as location and employer. You may even earn more than that. Salaries for senior level roles in adventure tourism can range from INR 700,000 to over INR 1 million annually, depending on the scope of responsibility, level of experience, and size and success of the organization.

Overall, adventure tourism doesn’t necessarily offer salaries comparable to other industries, but it does offer the opportunity to work in a dynamic outdoor environment, share your passion for adventure with others, and enjoy an adventure-first lifestyle.
