The European elections are fast approaching.
In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy party is expected to win the most votes in the European Parliament elections to be held on June 8-9.
This is according to a Euronews poll conducted at the end of April.
Support for the party was found to be stable at 28 percent.
The poll predicts the centre-left Democratic Party will come in second, followed by the populist Five Star Movement.
However, support for these two parties is on the rise.
According to a Euronews poll, both the Democrats and the Five Star Movement saw slight increases in support compared to last month.
Meanwhile, right-wing rivals the League and Forza Italia face a tough fight, with opinion polls predicting each will get just under 8% of the vote.
Meloni’s Strategy
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni personally led the party’s election campaign.
Analysts say the strategy is to achieve a high voter turnout in order to win as many seats as possible in the EU Parliament and influence the formation of any future coalition governments.
Her party, the Italian Brothers, is part of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the European Parliament.
Observers say Meloni’s goal is to be a key player in forming a centre-right grand coalition government with the European People’s Party, something outgoing European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also wants.
But before he can play in the big European matches, Meloni will have to overcome two hurdles in his home country.
One is his rival, Matteo Salvini, a leading partner in the European Parliament of France’s far-right leader, Marine Le Pen.
The second problem is the strengthening of the left.
If the Democratic Party, part of the Social Democrat group, can find common ground with former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte’s Five Star Movement, the left and centre-left forces could forge a stronghold in Italy’s volatile political climate.
