International air traffic to Mykonos is set to decline over the next 12 months, according to airlines announcing their plans for availability this summer.
Meanwhile, international visitor numbers to Santorini are stabilising after a year of decline.
This contrasts with Greece’s overall performance, where scheduled air seats from abroad increased by 8.1%.
According to Greek tourism industry sources, tourism in Mykonos has been in decline for the past three years, a trend that is blamed on, on the one hand, too many tourists without the necessary capacity and infrastructure, and on the other hand, particularly high prices and poor value for money.
Mykonos airport’s international passenger numbers fell 5.9% to 1.12 million last year, down from 1.19 million in 2022. Meanwhile, in Santorini, the airport’s international passenger numbers fell 9.9% to 1.5 million, down from 1.7 million in 2022.
Airlines plan to reduce the number of seats on flights to Mykonos by 5.8% this summer, according to aviation data tracker from the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE).
The biggest decrease is seen in flights departing from the UK. Flight schedules to Santorini for the same period remain unchanged compared to last year, with only a change of -0.2%.
