When it comes to travel, tourists from Germany, the UK and Italy are among the highest spenders.
This is according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), which is tracking which countries are spending the most, earning the most and where people are visiting in 2023.
European countries topped the rankings in several categories. Here are the results:
Which country has the highest tourism expenditure?
Chinese tourists are the highest spenders, with total spending reaching about 183 billion euros in 2023. With borders reopening for international travel, the Chinese overtook Americans, who spent 114 billion euros last year. A year ago, tourists from the United States were in the top spot.
Germans were the third biggest spenders with a total of €104 billion, while the British were fourth with €102 billion.
Canada, Italy, India, Russia and South Korea made the list of countries spending the most on tourism in 2023, with Italy jumping from 10th to seventh place.
Which country profits most from tourism?
In terms of tourism revenues, the United States tops the ranking, with a projected revenue of 164 billion euros in 2023. It is followed by Spain with 86 billion euros, the United Kingdom with 69 billion euros, France with 64 billion euros and Italy with 52 billion euros.
The United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Australia, Canada, Japan, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Macau (China), India and Mexico rounded out the top 15 countries in terms of tourism revenue.
What countries are tourists visiting?
Last year, two European countries were the most visited by foreign tourists. France remained the most visited country in the world with 100 million international tourists, a figure that is expected to be repeated in 2024, when Paris will host the Olympic Games in July and August.
Spain came in second with 85 million people, both ahead of the United States (66 million), Italy (57 million) and Turkey (55 million).
In total, seven of the 10 most visited destinations are in Europe, with Italy, Germany and Austria making the list. Europe attracts the most international visitors worldwide, making it one of the most popular regions.
China has also been a popular travel destination for many years, but visitor numbers to the country have fallen dramatically since strict entry requirements were introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, falling from 65.7 million in 2019 to just 35.5 million by 2023.
