CANCUN, Quebec — Private businesses in Cancun are beginning to invest in clean energy deployment, with Governor Mara Lezama citing the recent installation of Tesla batteries and a cutting-edge renewable energy system at Cancun’s Parnassus hotel as a recent example.
Following the guidelines and standards established by the state government on sustainability and energy efficiency, Golden Parnassus Hotel has become a benchmark in the hotel industry in the Mexican Caribbean region, becoming the first accommodation in Quintana Roo to be equipped with Tesla batteries and a state-of-the-art renewable energy system, she said.
The introduction of clean energy has been established as one of the permanent priorities of Quintana Roo’s Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA), which promotes innovative measures to spark a transformation in the energy sector.
In response to these government guidelines, the private sector has begun to invest heavily in specific projects to promote the use of clean energy.
Golden Parnassus Hotel has installed a Tesla battery and roof-mounted solar panel system, reducing energy consumption by 35% and maintaining operational continuity in a more sustainable and efficient manner.
The implementation of these systems will not only result in significant financial savings for the hotel, but will also contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions in the state and serve as a model for other establishments in the region.

With the aim of supporting the energy transition towards increased clean energy production, more efficient use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, the State Government, through the Department of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) and the Department of Tourism (SEDETUR), in collaboration with the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, is inviting the hotel sector to participate in an Energy Efficiency Pilot Programme.
The program includes providing technical support to conduct energy assessments of hotel facilities, followed by issuing recommendations on different commitment approaches, an assessment of expected savings (both economic and energy), and an estimate of relative emissions reductions.

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will provide the technical capacity necessary to establish linkages with the various available funding sources to achieve effective implementation of the identified measures, as well as provide free training to management and operational staff in developing action plans with specific strategies and performance indicators.
