Haikou and Singapore will celebrate cultural connections and tourism through events, promotions and authentic experiences, highlighting Haikou’s rich heritage and vibrant local life.
Haikou and Singapore are close to each other, have convenient transportation, and enjoy active cultural exchanges. The two places have commonalities, such as natural scenery, cultural traditions, and unique cuisine, and complement each other. On May 30, the 2024 Singapore-Haikou Landscape Lake International Golf Invitational Series kicked off at Haikou Landscape Lake. At the same time, the 2024 Haikou (Singapore) Tourism Promotion Conference, organized by Haikou Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports Bureau, was held. The event attracted mainstream media reporters, competitive golfers and business experts from Singapore. From a global perspective, they highlighted Haikou’s economic and social progress, as well as its rich tourism and cultural charm.
01 Enhance Haikou’s city brand and promote inbound tourism
“By promoting high-quality foreign exchange activities, conveying the ‘Voice of Haikou’ to Southeast Asia and showcasing a new image of Haikou, it has injecting new vitality into Haikou’s tourism and culture industry in terms of both ‘attracting’ and ‘selling out’,” said an official from Haikou Municipal Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports Bureau. The promotion event also highlighted the investment attraction function, focusing on promoting the tourism, culture and agricultural industries, and introducing Haikou’s tourism resources, investment environment and tourism and culture investment projects.
The promotional event was titled “Start from ‘New’ and Embrace the Never-ending Journey”. Xi Zhiqiang, chairman of Haikou Tourism Product Equipment Association, showcased the charm of Haikou’s tourism and cultural characteristics, highlighting the Nanyang culture and historical streetscape. Meilan District and Longhua District respectively highlighted their local resources and industrial strengths. Wenchang Municipal Tourism and Culture Bureau, which contributes to the “Haikou Economic Zone”, introduced the potential of space tourism, which resonates with the traditions of overseas Chinese.
Additionally, the “Hainan Chicken Rice” spotlight event featured demonstrations by young tourism professionals from different local associations and Vivian, founder of a well-known Haikou pastry brand, who through their entrepreneurial journeys highlighted Haikou’s tourism charm, the influence of prominent local enterprises and the city’s favorable business environment.
In a recent move, Hainan province announced the policy “Several measures to further promote the integration of culture, sports, tourism and commerce to expand consumption”. The initiative has streamlined entry and customs procedures for international visitors, improved payment convenience for Haikou’s tourists and strengthened the growth prospects of the inbound tourism market. The Singapore Haikou Laguna Golf Invitational Series, to be held at Laguna Golf in 2024, reflects Haikou’s proactive approach to leveraging its tourism and sports resources to host international events, enhancing the synergy between sports and tourism and expanding the inbound tourism sector.
02 Enhance the synergy between agriculture and tourism and increase the international exposure of local products
“Due to the long hours of sunshine in volcanic areas, Haikou’s king of lychees is exceptionally sweet, with a sweetness level usually exceeding 18 degrees,” Liao Shaoman, director of the Xiuying District Tourism and Culture Bureau, said during the event. Participants also had the chance to taste the unique volcanic lychee.
“Last year, I came to Haikou just during lychee season, and once I tasted it, I never forgot it. This year, I chose this season especially to come and bring some back to Singapore to share with my family,” said Singapore media reporter Wong Chin Chee while tasting some volcanic lychees. Haikou’s volcanic lychees are juicy and sweet, with small seeds and plenty of flesh, making them not only perfect gifts but also a representative symbol of Haikou’s local agricultural products.
In order to expand international marketing channels and raise awareness of GI products while expanding the tourism industry value chain, Haikou Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports Bureau has partnered with “Tmall Taobao Global” to implement the “618 Grand Promotion” on the Taobao Singapore platform. The collaboration allows Singapore users to enjoy discounts on Hainan specialty products by using a promo code when purchasing.
The promotional event also featured unique offline exhibition areas that captivated attendees, including sales sections for Haikou specialties, specialty products and agricultural tourism products, a “South Seas-themed” area offering Haikou specialty gifts, a romantic Haikou-themed section combining travel photography and interactive experiences, and an area dedicated to Haikou’s intangible cultural heritage and creative cultural products, whose blend of traditional heritage and contemporary design attracted great interest from visitors.
03 Connecting cultural exchange with pre-event excitement
Prior to the promotional event, a campaign titled “An Invitation to Love Haikou” was actively promoted on international social media platforms, generating great interest and lively discussion among audiences around the world. Capitalizing on this buzz, Haikou introduced activities themed around “Haikou’s Mysterious Great Gifts”, giving event participants and international visitors an early taste of Haikou’s vibrant culture and warm hospitality, further increasing interest.
During the promotional event, Haikou city invited guests from Singapore to indulge in the historic Qilin Old Street and share experiences in real time, promoting cultural exchange and tourism promotion. “The local cuisine here is truly authentic, from refreshing ‘Qingwuling’ desserts to tangy rice dishes,” said Singaporean journalist Patrick Daniel. Not only is Qilin Old Street steeped in history, it is also bustling with the vibrant daily activities of its residents.
Going forward, Haikou plans to adopt a more welcoming approach, utilize more abundant resources, improve the quality of services, and foster a more comfortable environment. The city aims to invite visitors from home and abroad to discover the diverse and vibrant Coconut City, and actively participate in global cultural tourism exchanges. Haikou hopes to attract guests from across the sea to share the city’s enduring vitality and charm.
