On Tuesday, the Brewers Association (BA) released its annual overview of the craft beer industry and list of the top 50 craft beer companies by volume in 2023.
Last year, the number of craft breweries in the United States reached an all-time high, with 9,683 operating in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., including 2,071 microbreweries, 3,467 brewpubs, and 3,900 breweries. Includes taproom breweries and 245 local craft breweries. However, for the second year in a row, the number of new brewery openings has declined, with just 495 opening in 2023, down from about 550 in 2022. The rate of business closures has also increased year-on-year, but BA doesn’t seem concerned. He said the 4% rate was “relatively low.”
Overall, small, independent craft breweries produced 23.4 million barrels of beer in 2023, down 1% from the previous year. On the bright side, the overall market share for craft beer grew to 13.3% in volume terms, an increase of 0.2% from 2022. The craft beer sector of the industry also fared better than the beer industry as a whole, where volumes fell 5.1% for the year. Over a year. Still, retail prices increased by 3%, bringing the market value to about $28.6 billion.
“2023 was another competitive and challenging year for small and independent brewers,” Bart Watson, vice president of strategy and chief economist at BA, said in a press release. Ta. “Nevertheless, despite slowing growth, small breweries continue to has proven to be very resilient.”
Of the top 50 producers overall in the United States, as ranked by BA in terms of beer sales and production, 40 are small, independent craft brewers.
“While the distribution industry remains highly competitive, we continue to see success stories and signs of growth across the Top 50 list,” Watson explained. “Even in times of slow growth, the strongest brands still resonate with beer lovers, regardless of company size or location.”
