CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Tourism has announced that the state will see a significant increase in international visitors in 2023, marking a significant milestone in Illinois’ tourism growth.
According to data provided by Tourism Economics, Illinois will welcome 2.16 million international tourists in 2023, reflecting a significant 39% increase over the previous year. This surge in international visitors shows that Illinois is an increasingly popular destination worldwide. Additionally, international visitors will inject approximately $2.7 billion into the Illinois economy in 2023, representing a 47% year-over-year spending increase.

Governor Juliana Stratton. “Our vibrant landscapes and iconic Chicago skyline have something for everyone to enjoy. We continue to welcome visitors from all over the world, making Illinois a truly special place. We hope you will be immersed in a rich tapestry of experiences.”
“The tourism sector plays a critical role in Illinois’ economy, creating jobs, driving economic growth, and supporting small businesses and communities across the state,” said DCEO Director Kristin Richards. “The record increase in international visitors is a testament to the strength of Illinois’ tourism industry and its ability to attract visitors from around the world.”
“Illinois is right in the middle of it all, and there’s no better place for international travelers,” said Sen. The Illinois Department of Tourism attributes this growth to strategic marketing efforts, enhanced partnerships, and a wide range of unique attractions and experiences that attract international travelers. The Illinois Department of Tourism partners with offshore offices in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Mexico to promote and market Illinois to international travelers.
