A major expansion of JetBlue’s operations was celebrated at St. Lucia’s Hewanorra International Airport on June 13 with the launch of the airline’s new daily direct flight from New York.
The event was a joint celebration involving the Ministry of Tourism, Investment, Creative Industries, Culture and Information, the Saint Lucia Tourism Board, the Saint Lucia Airport and Port Authority and the Saint Lucia Hospitality and Tourism Association.
A landmark arrival
The highlight of the evening was the arrival of Flight 781 from John F. Kennedy International Airport at 10:09pm.
The flight not only symbolizes JetBlue’s strengthening partnership with St. Lucia, but also the companies’ commitment to improving tourist access to the island.
The occasion was marked by a ceremonial ribbon cutting in the presence of the Minister of Tourism, Dr. Ernest Hilaire, among other key figures.

A warm welcome from Lucien
Passengers disembarking from the inaugural flight received more than the usual greeting.
They received special packaging and were able to enjoy a variety of delicious St. Lucian dishes, including cocoa tea and turnovers with coconut, giving them a taste of the island’s rich culinary traditions immediately upon arrival.
Economic and cultural benefits
The expansion of services will not only benefit travelers looking for convenience, but will also be a major economic boost for St. Lucia.

Minister Hilaire highlighted the economic benefits of the initiative, noting that it will increase connectivity without the need for a minimum income guarantee, benefit local businesses and create employment opportunities.
The service will also expand travel and shopping options for Saint Lucians.
In conjunction with the new flights, study trips are being organized for top travel agents in the New York area, with the goal of educating agents on the best of St. Lucia and increasing tourism.
Thaddeus M. Antoine, chairman of the Saint Lucia Tourism Board, highlighted the broader strategy to increase air transport capacity and meet growing travel demand to the island.
The plan includes a significant increase in cabin availability and ongoing negotiations to expand and introduce new airline service.
Commemorative Events
At the event, JetBlue pilots, Captain Bill Johnson and First Officer Tommy Ferreras, received a commemorative plaque celebrating the launch of a service that promises to enhance connections between New York and St. Lucia daily through July 23, 2024.
