Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir aims to boost golf tourism by hosting international tournaments and promoting top courses in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
The Government of Jammu and Kashmir and the Kashmir Tourism Department are working to establish Kashmir Valley as a world-class golfing destination.
LG Advisor Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar recently vowed to strengthen golf tourism in Kashmir. Golfers flock to the valley every year between April and November, attracted by the beautiful courses at Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam.
To promote golf tourism, Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha recently inaugurated the 44th PSPB Inter-Unit Golf Tournament at Royal Springs Golf Course, Srinagar. Lt. Governor Sinha invited golfers to experience the Union Territory and share the transformation story of Jammu and Kashmir. At the inauguration, Lt. Governor Sinha highlighted the progress made in the region over the past few years.
To attract golfers from around the world, the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department is planning additional tournaments to showcase the fine courses in various tourist destinations. In recent months, well-known golfers such as Ajay Jadiya, Yuvraj Singh and Ajit Agarkar as well as prominent cricketers have visited Kashmir to play golf.
Kashmir Tourism Director Yakub Raja said the government’s efforts are aimed at promoting Kashmir as a world-class sports destination, especially golf. “We are working to host international golf tournaments here,” Raja said.
He said 96 players from across the country participated in the recent tournament. Raja said he was optimistic of hosting a large international golf tournament soon with the support of the central government. “Kashmir has three golf courses that meet international standards and we are committed to hosting many more tournaments to establish Kashmir as an international golfing destination,” Raja added.
