Shafaq News / The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Tourism Board on Monday stressed that tourism in the region is crucial in showcasing Kurdish history, culture and identity as well as boosting the local economy.
“Music and painting introduce tourists to our people’s values, culture and traditions,” said Amal Jalal, head of the KRG Tourism Board, adding that “Kurdish music and poetry can forge a deep emotional connection with visitors, creating an unforgettable experience.”
“The artistic paintings capture the country’s stunning landscapes, historical events and ancient ruins, offering tourists a glimpse into the beauty and diverse activities of the country,” she noted.
Jalal also expressed concern about the growing dominance of foreign music and art in tourist destinations, saying “this issue is in contradiction with the strategic goal of protecting the cultural identity of the Kurdish people.”
“As a responsibility to our land, we ask all tourist establishments – restaurants, hotels, motels etc. – to feature Kurdish music, songs and artwork to highlight Kurdistan’s natural beauty, rich history and ancient ruins,” she added, asserting that “this will enhance national identity and support local artists.”
Domestic tourism in KRI is a major contributor to the country’s tourism boom, with approximately 150,000 local tourists enjoying the region’s beaches, historical sites and recreational activities. The region is home to over 3,100 tourist establishments and 1,075 accommodation options, providing diverse options for all types of travelers.
Investment in infrastructure is increasing the area’s attractiveness to tourists from both within and outside the region.
