The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) predicts that around five million Thais will travel domestically over two long weekends in July, generating revenue of around 18 billion baht for local tourism operators.
There are two long weekends this month: 20th-22nd July to celebrate the Buddhist Lent on 21st July, and 27th-29th July to celebrate the birthday of His Majesty the King on 28th July.
Thailand’s Ministry of Transport Governor Tapanee Kiatpaibul said on Tuesday the three regions expected to generate the most revenue over the holidays are the central region, including Bangkok (4.78 billion baht), followed by the eastern region (4.06 billion baht) and the southern region (3.01 billion baht).
She said most of those who chose to travel last weekend visited famous temples where religious ceremonies were held, while those travelling this weekend are more likely to visit venues where events are being held to celebrate the king’s 72nd birthday.
“This includes charitable work in honour of Her Majesty, such as reforestation projects in several states,” she said.
In Bangkok, several attractions will be open to the public on the King’s Birthday, including the Grand Palace, the Grand Pantheon and the National Museum.
The 10 provinces that welcomed the most Thai tourists over the weekend of July 20-22 were Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, Chon Buri, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phuket, Rayong, Ayutthaya, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Udon Thani and Phetchaburi.
According to the Tourism Authority report, Chon Buri had the highest average hotel occupancy rate during the period at 86 percent, followed by Udon Thani at 84 percent.
