The Mediterranean is a region rich in ancient history, incredible culture and delicious cuisine, and the countries surrounding the sea from which the region takes its name offer a wealth of opportunities for exploration to suit all travel styles.
No two destinations are alike. From the Roman ruins of Tunisia to France’s star-studded Côte d’Azur and the medieval centre of Barcelona, the Mediterranean offers a range of multicultural destinations with interconnected histories, yet each one entirely unique in its own right.
The best spots in the Mediterranean
When planning a trip to the Mediterranean, the hardest question is not what to visit, but what not to visit. Home to Spain, France, Italy, Croatia and Greece (the traditional heavyweight champions of the region’s tourism industry), the region is one of the most sought-after destinations in the world, and for good reason.
But the Mediterranean coast is home to some lesser-known gems, too. Coastal destinations in Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt and Turkey are growing in popularity among travelers looking to avoid the tourist throngs or see a new side of the wine-colored sea. To the north of the ocean, countries like Montenegro and Albania are hidden gems for American travelers, as are many of the lesser-known Mediterranean islands.
For travelers who have a hard time choosing one, a cruise is a great first trip to the region, visiting multiple ports in different destinations on one cruise and building a list of favorite places to visit on your next visit.
The best attractions in the Mediterranean
Why do travelers love to visit the Mediterranean? It is often considered the birthplace of Western civilization and the birthplace of Ancient Greece and Rome, with travelers flocking to the Parthenon in Athens and the Colosseum in Rome to see history first-hand. From Spain to France, to Turkey and Tunisia, traces of these cultures remain for us to see.

Other attractions include France’s glittering Cote d’Azur, the gourmet towns of Spain and Italy, and the glittering islands of Greece. Many travelers prefer the warmer and milder Mediterranean climate than that of northern Europe, and enjoy spending at least a day or two at the beach during their trip.
Must-see events in the Mediterranean in 2024
The Mediterranean world hosted the first Olympic Games in Ancient Greece, and now we can enjoy the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer in Paris and across France, the most anticipated sporting event in the world this year.
Mediterranean countries also host a multitude of cultural and religious festivals throughout the year, from numerous Easter celebrations, such as Barcelona’s Semana Santa, to Christmas markets and festivals.
Great place for families in the Mediterranean
When considering a Mediterranean family vacation, there are more destinations that are perfect for multi-generational groups than not. That said, some destinations, such as the vibrant Spanish island of Ibiza, known for its party scene, may not be as suitable for travelers with children.

However, cruises and single-country trips to destinations in the region are suitable for families of all ages and generations. Families with small children may find it easier to take slower trips to a single country or destination, as there are fewer layovers. Florence, the French Riviera, Mallorca and the coast of Croatia are all great destinations for families.
Best places for couples in the Mediterranean
From Rome to Venice, Marseille and beyond, romance abounds in the Mediterranean. Renowned as a bucket list destination, the region is considered the perfect honeymoon destination.
Couples often choose destinations like the Greek Islands, the South of France and Italy for their honeymoons and romantic getaways, but we also love less popular destinations like Albania and Croatia.
Great location for group trips in the Mediterranean
Whether you’re traveling with a large family or a group of friends, your group will find wonderful opportunities for exploration and socializing in the Mediterranean.
A Mediterranean group might take a tour that follows the incredible paths of saints like the Apostle Paul, visiting places from Biblical history like Ephesus. Or they might visit Tuscany to get a hands-on cooking demonstration of their favorite dishes. Or a group might take a cruise to visit more bucket list destinations and enjoy a seamless travel experience. Either way, a group tour experience, cruise, or dedicated travel advisor can ease the burden on group leaders and provide a more seamless travel experience.
Best places for solo travelers in the Mediterranean
Destinations throughout the Mediterranean are relatively safe for solo travelers. While we always encourage caution and preparation for solo travelers regardless of destination, destinations such as Nice, France, and Mallorca, Spain are safe destinations for solo travelers.
If safety is a big concern for you, consider joining a solo travel group tour or find out the safety ratings of your chosen destination and prepare accordingly.
Mediterranean gourmet hotspots
Considering the culinary culture of the countries that make up the Mediterranean Sea, there is literally nowhere that isn’t a fantastic foodie destination. From octopus to mussels, seafood is plentiful here, and it takes an adventurous foodie to enjoy fresh dishes of seafood.

But even for the pickiest eaters, the Mediterranean offers a fantastic adventure to tantalize your taste buds. While Italy is a great destination for American travelers with picky food, those with gluten intolerance may find it difficult to enjoy the world-famous pasta and pizza that are synonymous with traveling to Italy.
Travelers with food intolerances or allergies should research the cuisine of the places they are visiting so they can enjoy it without too much worry.
Meanwhile, wine! The Mediterranean is also known for its wines, from France to Italy and beyond, so next time you’re traveling, why not try a sip of some locally produced wine?
The perfect place for adventure travel
Hiking in Anatolia, sailing the Greek Islands, climbing and skiing in the Italian Alps: these are all just some of the adventure trips available to Mediterranean travellers.
Our recommendations for the best adventure travel destinations in the region are based on the type of adventure activity you want to experience. If you love water adventures, coastal or island destinations like Sardinia, the Greek Islands, and Croatia are the best choices. If you love mountain adventures, Turkey or Italy are better options.
The perfect place for sports lovers
The Mediterranean Sea has a long history of inspiring intrepid travelers to set sail. A really long history – think Homer’s “The Odyssey.” With that in mind, if you love sailing and boating, you’ll have no shortage of opportunities to do so in your destination of choice, provided it’s along the coast.
Another sport is football, which is very popular especially in Spain, but can also be enjoyed in Croatia and other parts of the region.
Moreover, car enthusiasts will also enjoy visiting the Monaco Grand Prix Historique 2024, a unique event that is sure to excite all car enthusiasts and adrenaline lovers.
Mediterranean specific
The Mediterranean is a unique destination, a place where countries, cultures and history collide, simply because they are separated by the sea. Ancient history lives in the culture, gastronomy, monuments and art that live in these places.
