Jamaica’s Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett, stressed the key role of rebuilding tourism in the Caribbean to strengthen the industry’s resilience.
Minister Bartlett, speaking at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation’s (CTO) Council of Ministers meeting during Caribbean Week in New York on June 18, made the case for changes aimed at strengthening the region.
A strategic vision that overcame obstacles
During Caribbean Week, held in conjunction with Caribbean American Heritage Month, Minister Bartlett highlighted the vital place of tourism as the lifeblood of the Caribbean.
He stressed the need to adapt to changing demands and potential disruptions post-COVID-19, highlighting that a strategic reassessment is essential.
Collaborative evolution
Minister Bartlett acknowledged the CTO Office’s request to reconsider the structure and supported a move from competition to a “joint petition.”

This approach would strengthen partnerships, creativity and opportunities across the region, ultimately benefiting local community life, he argued.
Planning for sustainable growth
The CTO’s main objective is to promote sustainable tourism development for the economic and social development of Caribbean countries.
Following deliberations this year, plans are underway to hire consultants and restructure the organisation.
